What to Expect on the Day of Your CPL Class (and What to Bring)

If you’ve signed up for a CPL class or are thinking about it, you might be wondering: What actually happens during the class? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. At SmartCarry, we’re committed to making sure you feel prepared, comfortable, and confident before you even walk through the door.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect on class day and what to bring with you.

When to Arrive

We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes early to allow time for check-in and paperwork. The class starts promptly and late arrivals may not be admitted, as full attendance is required to receive your certification.

What the Day Looks Like

Our CPL certification course includes:

  1. Classroom Instruction (Approx. 5 hours)
    We’ll cover:

    • Firearm safety rules and best practices

    • Legal use of deadly force in Michigan

    • Conflict avoidance and de-escalation tactics

    • Responsible carry methods

    • Safe storage and transportation

  2. Live-Fire Training (Approx. 3 hours)
You’ll go to the range with your instructor for hands-on training, including:

    • Loading and unloading safely

    • Proper grip and stance

    • Aiming and trigger control

    • Shooting qualification

Our instructor will be with you the entire time to offer guidance, corrections, and support.

What to Bring

Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need on class day:

  • Valid government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, etc.)

  • A handgun (if you don’t have one, we offer rentals)

  • Notebook and pen (optional, but helpful for taking notes)

Dress Code

Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Avoid low-cut tops (hot brass happens!) and consider a hat with a brim to shield your face while shooting.

Final Tips

  • Come well-rested and ready to learn

  • Ask questions—we’re here to help you grow

  • Take your time on the range; this isn’t a race
