Who can take the CPL certification course?

To enroll in our CPL course, you must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and legally eligible to possess a firearm under Michigan law.

What does the course include?

Our course includes 8 hours of required training: 5 hours of classroom instruction covering firearm safety, conflict avoidance, and Michigan CPL law, plus 3 hours of live-fire range training.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Upon successful completion of the course and range qualification, you’ll receive a signed Certificate of Completion, which you’ll submit with your CPL application to your county clerk.

Do I need to bring my own gun?

You can bring your own handgun if it's unloaded and stored properly. We also offer rentals for students who don’t have their own firearm. Please contact us in advance to reserve one.

What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable clothing with closed-toe shoes. Avoid low-cut shirts (to protect from hot brass) and consider wearing a hat with a brim during range time.

What should I bring with me?

Please bring:

• A valid government-issued photo ID

• Your firearm (if bringing your own)

• Eye and ear protection (if bringing your own)

• A pen and notebook (optional)

What happens if I miss my class?

We offer one-time rescheduling if you notify us at least 72 hours in advance. No-shows or late cancellations may forfeit the class fee.

Do you offer private training or advanced classes?

Private instruction and advanced training options are in development. Join our interest list to be the first to know when they launch.

Does completing the course guarantee I’ll get a CPL?

No. SmartCarry provides the training and certificate required to apply, but the decision to issue your CPL lies with your county clerk and law enforcement agency.

Can I still take the class if I’ve never handled a gun before?

Absolutely. Our course is beginner-friendly, and we welcome first-time firearm users. You’ll receive hands-on, guided instruction every step of the way.
